Hello,
The weather was much improved today. It was a beautiful sunny day. After they canceled my cruise last night I started calling them. Their line was busy for hours. I finally got ahold of them and asked if they had any cruises today that I could get on. They said all the boats were full. I told them I was only one person and I had been trying to call for hours. So they squeezed me in on the 10:00am cruise this morning. Below we are leaving the dock from downtown Munising.
Below is the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse. Constructed of wood, the light first opened for service in 1868. This is one of the first things we saw on my two and a half hour cruise this morning.
Unique to this area is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The name "Pictured Rocks" comes from the streaks of mineral stain that can be seen on the face of the weathered-sculpted cliffs.
The cruise being canceled yesterday was probably a blessing in disguise. The weather today was a little cool, but other than that flawless.
One of the most stunning formations is Petit Portal, most famously known as Lovers Leap. The natural archway was chiseled and formed by the unrelenting might of Lake Superior. Legend has it that a Native American woman who, heartbroken after her lover failed to return from a hunting trip, flung herself from a cliff to her demise.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore hugs the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It's known for the dramatic multicolored Pictured Rocks cliffs. The rock formation pictured below is called Grand Portal.
You may have seen a video last month of a massive cliff collapse here at Pictured Rocks. The picture below is the place that it happened.
Battleship Row is a series of cliffs jutting into Lake Superior that resemble ship bows at the ready.
To the left in the picture below is the Broken Flower Pot formation.
Indian Drum is three rock formations emerging into the lake at the base but connecting at the peak. Combined they make a drum.
Below you can see kayakers rowing past Chapel Rock.
The Miners Castle formation is located approximately 6.5 miles east of Munising and is probably the most recognizable of all formations within the Pictured Rocks National Park and Lakeshore.
It was almost 1:00 as I was pulling out of Munising after the cruise. There is no way I was going to drive almost 300 miles and do the other things I had scheduled for today. So I added a day to my trip and pushed everything back a day. I did drive about fifty miles to Marquette. The first thing I saw there was the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse.
I had not originally planed on coming to Marquette at all. The waterfront here is very pretty. I drove through Presque Isle Park. The black rocks there at Sunset Point made a nice picture.
I'm spending the night here at a My Place Hotel. I have never stayed at one of these before. They just built one in Plainfield. It's ok. The people in the room above me are apparently practicing their clogging. Nonstop stomping.
I booked this hotel because it said the rooms had recliners. Below is a collage of my room. Do you see a recliner?
I just finished dinner. I had a delicious cheeseburger from the Queen City Burger Company which is across the street from my hotel. Even more delicious than the burger was the fried banana bread I had for dessert.
After dinner it's time to write emails and listen to the Reds game. They're losing 2-0 so far.
That's it for today,
Tim |
