Greetings from the UP,
I left my beautiful room at the Magnuson Grand Hotel in Paradise at about 8:00 this morning. It wasn't raining this morning. The sun even managed to peak through the 99% cloud cover a time or two. It was only a twelve mile drive to my first stop of the day at Tahquamenon Falls. The Tahquamenon Falls are two different waterfalls on the Tahquamenon River. Both sets are located near Lake Superior here in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The water is notably brown in color from the tannins leached from the cedar swamps which the river drains. Since I drowned the camera I use for my still shots I have been using my camcorder to take the still images. It does a really poor job, especially with water. So all of today's waterfall pictures look awful. Watch the video above for a much better view of the falls. The picture below is from the lower falls.
The lower falls are located four miles downstream from the upper falls and are a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. The half mile long trail running between the falls along the riverside was very pretty.
Next it was over to the upper falls. The upper falls are more than 200 feet across and with a drop of approximately 48 feet. During the late spring runoff the upper falls become the third most voluminous vertical waterfall east of the Mississippi River.
From this point you can walk down 94 steps to the brink of the falls. I did that about forty years ago. Today I did not, for obvious reasons today.
Next I drove 84 miles to Munising. There are numerous waterfalls in Munising. The first one I stopped at was Wagner Falls. Sorry, this awful picture is the best I can do. I thought about grabbing an image off the Internet and claiming it as my own, but that would be cheating.
There were a lot of people at the next waterfall I visited. It was Munising Falls.
This is when it started to rain. I made my way over to the far west side of town to visit the Grand Island Harbor Scenic Overlook. Here you get an elevated look at Lake Superior.
About two more miles west of that overlook is the town of Christmas, Michigan. Below is Santa's workshop.
I turned around and headed back to Munising from Santa's Workshop. Below is a mural in downtown Munising.
Still raining I decided to check into my fleabag motel. When I had to reschedule this trip everything in town was sold out except this establishment. So I booked it.
All the furnishings in the room appear to be a hundred years old. There is no desk or table in the room. I had to take the lamp and phone off the nightstand and use it as a desk. The carpet is also soaking wet. And I get all this splendor for only $202 a night.
The reason I came to Munising was to take a scenic three hour cruise of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. About thirty minutes ago I got an email saying... "Due to extreme weather conditions, high north winds and high waves, on Lake Superior, your cruise has been canceled." I am very disappointed. Well, at least that gives me more time to enjoy this fleabag. I got my dinner from the under-staffed grocery store across the street.
Weather is supposed to be better tomorrow. I'll leave you until then.
