Howdy folks,
I hope everyone had a fantastic fourth yesterday. Mine was great. My string of perfect weather days came to an end today. There were clouds and rain along with some sunshine. Today was my third and final day in Mackinaw City. I scheduled this extra day as a backup plan in case of bad weather. Since there wasn't any bad weather I accomplished everything that I wanted to on this side of the bridge. So today I drove down to Presque Isle, about 80 miles south of the bridge along Lake Huron. Along the way I stopped at this cute little waterfall, Ocqueoc Falls. I later learned that it is actually the largest waterfall on Michigan's lower peninsula.
Next I made my way over to Presque Isle. Here you get two lighthouses for the price of one. The old one and the new one. We'll start with the new one. The New Presque Isle Light was built in 1870 and sits on the namesake peninsula. It is one of 149 lighthouses in Michigan, more than any other state.
The tower stands 109 feet high. If it had been 108 feet shorter than that I would have climbed to the top.
The Presque Isle Light Station is situated at the north end of Presque Isle Peninsula, one mile beyond the Harbor and its Old Lighthouse.
The Old Presque Isle Light was the first lighthouse in the Presque Isle area, built in 1840. The tower and dwelling did not last long in the harsh weather, however, and by 1867 they were deteriorated enough for Congress to find need for a newer station. It presently is not operational and is a museum.
This old one, though, has not been completely dismissed, at least by the superstitious. Lake legend says the station still provides a residence for ghosts who haunt the light. The ghost of George Parris, a former museum caretaker who is now deceased is said to haunt the light. Though the light has long since been deactivated, the tale says that George returns habitually to light the lamp.
I managed to avoid rain until now. There was some mostly light rain on my drive back to Mackinaw City. But it stopped when I got to the Cheboygan Crib Light in Cheboygan, Michigan.
On my way back to the hotel I stopped by the KFC for another one of those crispy chicken sandwiches.
As I look out the window as I am writing this, I see that the sun is shining again. Today was a fairly light day of activity. Which is a good thing. I am old and need some rest. I have a full day of activities planned for tomorrow.
