MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON OCTOBER 17, 2019
Hello folks,

I had a great day today. I left the motel in Fayetteville just after 8:00 this morning. The rain had stopped but the skies were completely overcast. My first job today was to drive about twenty miles down to Babcock State Park. This was on yesterday's itinerary but due to the rain-shortened day I wasn't able to work it in. I'm sure glad I didn't skip it. Some the prettiest scenery I have ever seen.

I tested my feet to their limits as the best view in the park was down several rocky steps making my scooter unusable. From there you get a spectacular view of the Glade Creek Grist Mill above the waterfall. This is considered one of the most photographed places in the state.

I sat down on the rocks and rested my feet before coming back up. I wouldn't have minded sitting there all day. I think the pictures that I took here are as pretty as any I have ever taken. Below I'll include one more from the dozens that I took. It is just the grist mill after I climbed back up from the stream. {Click HERE to watch my video of Babcock State Park.}

Next it was about a forty mile drive to my next stop on the usual, narrow, winding West Virginia roads. During the drive most of the clouds moved out and it became a much nicer day than I expected. Although quite cool, it stayed well below 60. The next place I visited was Grandview Overlook. This is another high vantage point looking down on another section of the New River Gorge. {Click HERE to watch my video of Grandview.}

My next stop was only about twenty miles away. The last seven miles of that was on a very interesting road. It was a two-way road but I don't know what I would have done if someone had been coming the other direction while I was on it. The road was not paved, hairpin curves, mostly down hill, no guardrails or signs of any kind. It took a while to drive those seven miles. I snapped a photo of my car deep in the woods on that, road?

It was less than a half mile down River Road to the Sandstone Falls Boardwalk from where the skinny path let me out. This was another really beautiful place.

This is the largest waterfall on the New River spanning 1500 feet across. Divided by islands, the falls drop from 10 to 25 feet. A quarter mile, handicapped accessible boardwalk crosses two bridges leading to islands and observation decks offering fantastic views of the falls.

When I got to the end of the boardwalk I walked out onto the rocks in the middle of the river and sat down. The water was falling just inches from my feet in the picture below. I probably shouldn't have risked it due to my feeble feet, but anything for a good picture. {Click HERE to watch my video of Sandstone Falls.}

Two or three miles south of Sandstone Falls you come to Brooks Falls. The word falls might be a generous term for what is going on here.

To get back to the Interstate you have to drive south to the small town of Hinton and cross the river there and then come back up the other side. Below is beautiful downtown Hinton, West Virginia in all its autumn splendor.

Next I drove most of the way to Lewisburg, West Virginia. I made a slight detour at the end to go see the Herns Mill Covered Bridge. It was built in 1879, and is a Queen post truss bridge measuring 10 feet, 6 inches wide and 53 feet, 8 inches long.

I stopped and took a picture of a pretty farm shortly after crossing the covered bridge.

Next it was into Lewisburg where I am spending the night. I passed the Old Stone Presbyterian Church on the way to my motel. The congregation of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church was organized on August 6, 1783 as Lewisburg Presbtyerian Church and first worshiped in a log house a few miles west of Lewisburg. A few years later the congregation began to build their current sanctuary, completing construction in 1796. It is thought to be the oldest church building in continuous use west of the Alleghenies.

I'm staying at another Quality Inn tonight. I am finally going to leave West Virginia tomorrow. I'll sign off now. I'm starving. I'm going to get dinner from Ruby Tuesday next door.
