TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2012:

Tuesday morning we sailed into the harbor of Vigo, Spain
after a turbulent crossing of the Bay of Biscay.

All of the images below are thumbnails and can be clicked on for a larger image.

The shiped docked in the center of town.

I took a shore excursion to Santiago de Compostela which is about 50 miles north of Vigo.
The city has its origin in the shrine of Saint James the Great, now the city's cathedral,
as destination of the Way of St. James, a leading Catholic pilgrimage route originated in
the 9th century. In 1985 the city's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After touring the cathedral I had time for a walk around the Old Town.

MY DAY IN NORTHWEST SPAIN VIDEO

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON NOVEMBER 6, 2012
Hello Folks,

It has been a couple days since my last email. Yesterday was a day at sea as we crossed the Bay of Biscay. And a very rough one it was. The ship started rocking Sunday night shortly after we left Le Havre and it didn't calm down until around 6:00 yesterday night. It was a lucky day for me. I spent a lot of the day in the casino and managed to win about $400. Yesterday afternoon I decided to try my luck at bingo. I have played a few times before on sea days to pass the time, but I have never won anything. It appeared to be the same yesterday until the big final cover all game, when I was actually the sole winner and won the $400 prize. It would have been more if I had won in less numbers. There are 7 sea days left on this cruise, so I'm sure I'll probably donate it back, but right now I am up about $800.

Today was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. We docked in Vigo, Spain at 9:30 this morning. Sunshine is actually unusual for this part of Spain, in the far northwest corner of the country. It rains almost everyday between October and May here. But not today. Very pretty part of the country here. More like Ireland than Spain. Lots of green rolling hills. The picture below was taken as we sailed into Vigo this morning.

Except for sailing in and out I didn't spend any time in Vigo itself. I journeyed about 50 miles north of the city to Santiago. We crossed the suspension bridge below as we left Vigo.

We passed through the pretty town of Pontevedra on the way to Santiago.

When we got to Santiago we passed this beautiful small old church on the way to the cathedral.

Santiago De Compostela is the shrine to Saint John the Apostle, the patron saint of Spain. The cathedral was the site for Christian pilgrimage in the middle ages.

It's a beautiful old cathedral. Below is another view from the other side near the clock tower.

The interior of the cathedral was not as beautiful as the cathedrals I visited in England.

Below is the main square of Santiago where all the town's prominent buildings are. The cathedral, city hall, the chancellor building of the university and the former hospital (now a hotel). The hotel is what is pictured below.

City Hall is pictured below which would be on the left in the picture above, directly across from the cathedral.

After the cathedral I had about an hour to walk around the cobblestone streets of the city.

It was a nice visit. We drove back to Vigo after leaving Satiago. I walked back on the ship at 4:45 and by 5:00 we were sailing away.

About 90 minutes after we sailed away there was a beautiful sunset.

We are now sailing for Lisbon, Portugal and will dock there at 8:00 tomorrow morning. As I am writing this I am watching election coverage from the BBC. It is interesting seeing their take on our ridiculous election. While it is nearly 11:00pm here, none of the polls have closed yet back in the U.S.

More later,

Tim
