WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2012:
We sailed into Lisbon just before dawn on a gloomy Wednesday morning.
My first excursion of the day was a walking tour of historic Lisbon.
We started our walk in the Alfama district.
All of the images below are thumbnails and can be clicked on for a larger image.
Our walk took us to Commerce Square.
Through the arch is Augusta Street, the main shopping street in the city.
At the other end of Augusta Street is Rossio Square.
In the afternoon I took a tram tour of the city and after that we made some stops at various
places such as the Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Hello Everyone, As I was waking up this morning Obama was making his acceptance speech. We docked in Lisbon, Portugal at 8:00 this morning. The ship docked right beside the 25th of April Bridge which was modeled after the Golden Gate Bridge. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was built in the 60s. It's still the second longest in Europe. It wasn't a very nice day. I started with a walking tour of the city. It was an interesting walk along the narrow and hilly streets of the city. We stopped at the city's many squares and monuments. The picture below was taken from Commerce Square. That is the main shopping street through the arch in the picture above. We rode the funicular in the picture below. This is the point where it started to rain and there was a light rain most of the rest of the day. I took an hour long ride on one of the city's many cable cars like the one seen in the picture below. Below is Rosa Square, the main square of the city. Next we visited the monastery pictured below. Below you can see one of the city's pretty war memorials through a rain splashed window. Our last stop of the day was at the Discoveries Monument. It was an interesting day. The rain never got much stronger than a mist. We sailed away at 5:00. This was my only new country of the trip, this was my first time in Portugal. Portugal isn't doing too well. They are in danger of becoming the next Greece. One of the guides was telling us that she has to pay 40% in payroll taxes plus the sales tax here is 23%. OUCH! Unemployment rate is 18% officially but in reality much worse than that. We are now starting our crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Nine days left of the cruise and seven of those are sea days. Our next port is the Azore Islands on Friday. Tim |
