MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2007:

Monday was a very fun day crossing the Canterbury Plain and then the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass.
My first stop was just outside Springfield, New Zealand at the Alpine Jet along the Waimakariri River.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2007
Howdy all,

Wow, time sure is flying. Sure doesn't seem like I have been gone over three weeks now. Today was a fun day. Left Christchurch this morning which is on the South Island's east coast. Weather was great, not a cloud in the sky. That is a very rare occurrence here. I traveled about 80 kilometers west of Christchurch to the base of the mountains. This is where I took a jet boat ride up the Waimakariri River. That was a blast. Out in the middle of nowhere we jetted up the river with mountains towering above us on both sides. Our pilot said he hadn't seen a day this clear all year.

After the jet boat it was time to cross the Southern Alps Mountain Range over Arthur's Pass. Not a cloud in the sky all the way up the mountain. Coming down the other side I went through the Otira Gorge. Within minutes after crossing the pass it clouded over and rained pretty much all the way into Greymouth where I am staying tonight. Greymouth is on the West coast of the South Island. A dumpy little town really. It's definitely not the Waldorf Astoria where I am staying tonight.

I was happy to see the Colts won on Saturday. I can't believe the Colt defense held them to six points.

The picture I attached today was taken near where I got on the jet boat at the base of the mountains.

Will write more later,

Tim
