SATURDAY, JULY 26, 2014:
Today I traveled 228 miles on my journey between Vancouver, Washington and Bend, Oregon.

The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest.
Up to 4,000 feet deep, the canyon stretches for over 80 miles as the river winds
westward through the Cascade Range forming the boundary between Washington and Oregon.
The Historic Columbia River Highway is an approximately 75-mile-long scenic highway
in Oregon between Troutdale and The Dalles, built through the Columbia River Gorge.
Multnomah Falls is on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge.
The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet
and a lower falls of 69 feet, with a gradual 9 foot drop in elevation between the two,
so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet.
Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon.
The gorge holds federally protected status as a National Scenic Area
called the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area.
From Hood River I left the Columbia River Gorge and headed south.
I passed the 11,249 foot Mount Hood and stopped at two scenic state
parks near Redmond, Peter Skene Odgen Scenic Wayside and Smith Rock.

Hi, It was a warm and sunny day in Oregon today. I left my hotel in Vancouver, Washington at 7:30 this morning. About five minutes later I crossed the border into Oregon. My first order of business today was to explore the Columbia River Gorge. My first stop was at the Vista House at Crown Point.  There would have been a nice view of the gorge from there, but it was looking directly into the early morning sun and the only thing you can see is haze. The gorge is loaded with waterfalls. The first one I came to was Latourell Falls.  The most famous and popular waterfall is Multnomah Falls.  I slowly walked up to the bridge in the middle of the two falls. My next waterfall was Horsetail Falls.  There were other waterfalls too but those were the nicest. I drove over the Bridge of the Gods back into Washington for a short while. The picture below of the Columbia River was taken from Washington.  I crossed back in to Oregon at Hood River. I had a bite to eat there and then continued on my way. I drove south from Hood River around Mount Hood. It is an impressive mountain peak.  I drove for about 120 miles in to central Oregon. There are a couple of pretty state parks near Redmond. The first was Peter Skene Odgen Scenic Wayside which is the photo below.  The bridge you see in the foreground is the old bridge. The new highway bridge is on the other side of it. You can walk out onto the old bridge and look down into the gorge. The second park was Smith Rock State Park.  I am spending the night in Bend, which was 22 miles south of Smith Rock.
