WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2014:

Today I remained in the Black Hills of South Dakota all day.
I would travel about 121 miles on the day.

All of the images below are thumbnails and can be clicked on for a larger image.

My first activity was a half hour helicopter flight.
After that I drove the very scenic Needles Highway in Custer State Park.

The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile roadits a spectacular drive through pine
and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains.
The roads name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon.

My last stop in Custer State Park was Sylvan Lake.

It was a short drive to Deadwood next where I checked into my hotel.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON JULY 16, 2014
Hello everyone,

First thing this morning I took a helicopter flight over the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was a nice flight but it was a little hazy and there was a lot of distortion shooting video through the bubble-like window. Below is Mount Rushmore from the helicopter.

After returning to the ground I took a drive along the Needles Highway. This was a very scenic drive.

Above and below are the Cathedral Spires.

I flew directly over this spot in the Helicopter earlier. The picture below is the Cathedral Spires from the helicopter.

If you look closely you can see the Needle's Eye Tunnel in the picture below.

The picture below was taken a few minutes later on the other side of the spires after going through the tunnel.

The tank that I am driving just barely fit through. After descending from the spires I took a walk around part of Sylvan Lake.

Next it was about a fifty mile drive to where I am spending the night, Deadwood, South Dakota. After checking in to the hotel I took a drive through nearby Spearfish Canyon. My first stop was at Roughlock Falls.

A little further down the road I passed Bridal Veil Falls.

When I got back to my hotel in downtown Deadwood, I took a walk down Main Street.

I watched a gunfight in the street. The town is full of casinos. I did a little gambling and lost a few dollars but didn't play long. I'm leaving South Dakota in the morning and heading for Montana.
