NORTHERN GERMANY

(Map of Germany)

MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2011:

Early Monday morning the Emerald Princess docked in Warnemunde, Germany.
Most of my travel companions on the ship would venture to Berlin today. A six hour drive roundtrip.
Since I just left Berlin four days ago I decided to goto Scherwin instead.

Schwerin is surrounded by many picturesque lakes. The largest of these lakes, the Schweriner See.
Our first order of business in Scherwin was a boat ride across the lake.
Unfortunately it was kind of foggy so we didn't get to see very much.
We did get some nice views of the castle as we circled it.

We got off the boat at Schwerin Castle and toured the inside of the castle.
For centuries the castle was the home of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg.
Today the castle serves as the seat of the state parliament.

After the castle visited we went into the center of town where we had lunch.

After lunch we had some time on our own where we could walk around town.

In the middle of the afternoon we drove back to Rostock, about a ninty minute drive.
We visited St. Mary's Church in Rostock.
The huge baroque prospect of the "Marienorgel" was developed and built in 1770 by Paul Schmidt,
an organ maker from Rostock. Behind the high altar on the apse is an astronomical clock
built in 1472 by Hans Duringer, a clockmaker from Nuremberg.

We took a short walk through downtown before returning to the ship.

At lot of the tours that went to Berlin were late in getting back
so we didn't sail away from Warnemunde until after dark.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON AUGUST 1, 2011
German greetings,

I am back in Germany today. The port is Warnemunde, Germany, but it's really part of the city of Rostock. It was a really long stop here. We docked at 6:00 this morning and aren't leaving until 9:00 tonight. Most of the people on the ship are doing tours to Berlin today which is a three hour drive each way. But since I have already been in Berlin I went over to Schwerin instead which is about a 75 minute drive from the port.

The first thing we did in Schwerin was take a boat cruise across the lake to the historic center of the city. It was kind of foggy this morning so we didn't get a very good view of the lake. When we got to town the boat circled around Schwerin Castle, which is an island in the center of town.

We took a tour of the castle. No photography was allowed inside so I don't have any pictures of the interior.

There are over 600 rooms in the castle. We visited about 20 rooms.

After the tour of the castle we had a nice lunch at a local restaurant. Then we had some free time to walk around town on our own.

We drove back to Rostock after our free time. We took a brief walk through the historic center of Rostock before returning to the ship.

When I got back on the ship I had to do laundry. Tomorrow will be a much needed sea day. Vacations are fun but they are also hard work. After almost three straight weeks of nonstop activity I could use the rest. I think I am also catching a cold. The tours to Berlin must have gotten back late. We were supposed to leave at 9:00 and there is still a line of people waiting to get back on board well past 9:00.
