SUNDAY, JULY 31, 2011:

On Sunday morning the Emerald princess docked in Aarhus, Denmark.
Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark and the largest city in the Jutland region.
Jutland is the name of the peninsula that juts out in Northern Europe toward
the rest of Scandinavia, forming the mainland part of Denmark.

After disembarking the ship I journeyed to Silkeborg.
In the Silkeborg Museum we saw the Tollund Man.
The Tollund Man is the naturally mummified corpse of a man who lived during the 4th century BC.
He was found in 1950 buried in a peat bog on the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark, which preserved his body.

Somewhere in the insignificant outskirts of Silkeborg in the middle of Jutland a small hump
on the ground rises just above the treetops. 482 feet of elevated grassland offer a greyish-green
and semi-pointy excrescence to the otherwise flat and featureless horizon.
When the guy in charge of naming places came strolling by, he apparently got so struck with awe at the
sight of this coincidental pile-up of clay, that he named it Himmelbjerget, "Sky Mountain" in English.

The last stop on our tour of Jutland was a ride on a vintage steam train.
It was about a 15 minute, supposedly scenic ride between the towns of Bryrup and Vrads.

The folks in Aarhus and Jutland were very warm and welcoming. And while there is nothing
wrong with the Jutland area. It is certainly a mystery to me why there was a need to stop here.
Last year on this same cruise they stopped in Gdansk, Poland instead of here.
I would have much preferred that.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON JULY 31, 2011
Danish greetings,

This afternoon we visited a city you have probably never heard of. I never heard of it prior to booking this cruise. I am talking about the city of Aarhus, Denmark. I really have no idea why we stopped here. There is absolutely nothing here. I should have skipped the shore excursion and stayed on the ship but I didn't. The first place we visited was the town of Silkeborg, pictured below.

Next we journeyed to the highest peak in the country of Denmark. I was lucky I didn't get a nose bleed. They call it Sky Mountain and the peak is at a whopping 500 feet above sea level. I thought I might have trouble breathing at such a high altitude, but it wasn't too bad.

Next we journeyed to a small town to take a train ride. This is where this thrilling tour hit a snag. When we got there the train wasn't there. We waited around a while when someone showed up to tell us that the train was waiting for us on the other end. So we all hop back in the bus to meet the train on the other side. Then they get a phone call saying the train had left and was going to pick us up where we just left. So we go back and wait for it to arrive. Finally after about an hour of waiting we enjoyed our thrilling 20 minute train ride through some trees.

This thrilling tour lasted five hours. At 7:00 this evening we sailed away from beautiful Aarhus, Denmark. I'm sure you'll all be contacting your travel agents to book your trips here real soon.

The highlight of the day was winning $320 in the casino tonight. We are now sailing toward Germany where we will be tomorrow.
