Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. This is the house at 55 Pinner Hill Road that Reg Dwight called home for the first years of his life and where he first encountered the piano. It was actually the home of grandparents Fred and Ivy Harris. |

The Northwood Hills Hotel, where young school-age Reg played ballads of the Jim Reeves/Ray Charles variety on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The funds raised enabled him to buy his first electric piano. He happily took requests, learning at an early age how to build up a rapport with his audience. |

Semi-prefessional status came in 1961 when Reg joined the group Bluesology. At the end of 1966 they linked with a star named Long John Baldry. With Baldry intent on taking the group the cabaret route, Reg needed a more satisfactory outlet for his talents, and found it when auditioning for Liberty Records as a songwriter, when he was put in touch with lyricist Bernie Taupin (pictured with Elton at left). |

1972 was a year of change. The month of May saw the official demise of Reginald Kenneth Dwight as, by deed poll, he officially became Elton Hercules John. Pictured at left is the three-men line-up of Elton John, Dee Murray, and Nigel Olsson. Their ranks would soon be joined by Scot Davey Johnstone.
One of the 1970s' most prolific musicians. Only 1972 and 1977 would see less than two albums unleashed on a waiting public during the decade that saw the former Reg Dwight shoot to the very top of pop. |

Elton's 1974 US tour boasted a 35-strong cast of musicians, roadies, and management. Little wonder they needed their own Boeing jetliner to take them from city to city in comfort. |

In 1975 the artist formerly known as Cherilyn Sarkasian LaPier meets the one-time Reginald Kenneth Dwight. Pictured at left is Elton with Bette Midler, Cher, and Flip Wilson on the dazzling Cher Bono Television Special. Also in 1975, Elton played the Pinball Wizard in Ken Russell's big-screen adaption of the rock opera "Tommy". |

Elton displays his lifelong affection for Disney by taking on the character of Donald Duck. He's also been known to perform as Minnie Mouse, while a further brush with Walt's animal kingdom would come in 1994 when he re-entered the soundtrack world. |

Elton in 1982 with recently reassembled "dream team" of Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray. The next step would be to return to the recording studio in Montserrat for the "Too Low For Zero" album, the first of the new decade to reach the creative peaks Elton's fans had come to expect during the 1970s. |

Valentine's Day 1984, and it's all smiles as the new Mr and Mrs John emerge from St. Mark's Church in Darling Point, Sydney, Australia. It would be fair to say that the news of the nuptials astonished Elton's fans and friends alike. |

In 1992 Elton pledges to donate the royalties from all his future American singles to combat AIDS. Two years earlier, he had made a similar statement concerning the royalties from his UK singles. In March 1993 he inaugurated the Elton John Aids Foundation with what would become an annual post-Oscar party in Beverly Hills. Elton was to make fund raising for the Foundation a central pillar of his new, "cleaned-up" life. |

In 1994 Elton was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of fame, one of the few musical accolades that he hadn't received in the preceeding quarter of a century. In 1995 Elton and Tim Rice show off their Academy Awards for Disney's The Lion King. The soundtrack sold over ten million copies worldwide, while the film would be converted into a hit Broadway show that opened in late 1997. |

The Rocket Man and the People's Princess. Having met Diana back in the early 1980s at Prince Andrew's 21st birthday party, Elton had suffered with her as the Royal romance withered and died. After Diana's tragic death in Paris in 1997, Elton put the thoughts of a grieving nation into song with the help of his faithful lyricist Bernie Taupin. Sales of "Candle In The Wind '97" broke all records. The proceeds went to the charities Diana had worked with so closely. |

Elton congratulates Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks on their Oscars. In 1997, he would be working on a Spielberg project entitled El Dorado. This animated feature, scheduled to be screened in November 1999, told the story of two adventurers seeking their fortune in the mythical Spanish city. |

Elton John and Tim Rice teamed up once again, this time they adapted the Verdi opera "Aida" into a musical stage production, complete with an accompanying pop/R&B soundtrack. The result was a multitiered musical journey that evoked a new level of artistic mastery for John. The soundtrack collection, "Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida," featured 14 songs recorded by a host of the industry's most revered and popular acts: LeAnn Rimes, Sting, James Taylor, Janet Jackson, Spice Girls, Boyz II Men, Shania Twain, Tina Turner, and Elton John himself. It's worldwide release was on March 23, 1999 on Rocket Records. |

Elton John was honored at the 42nd Grammy Awards as the year's MusiCares Person of the Year honoree, and in many ways it couldn't be a more fitting tribute to a man who has not only reclaimed his own life, but in turn helped so many others better theirs. Taking into account his Elton John AIDS Foundation and the proceeds from his "Candle In The Wind '97" tribute to the late Princess Diana alone, John has helped raise many millions of dollars for those in need, and that represents just a portion of his benevolent activities. John's role as philanthropist surprises no one more perhaps than the artist himself, but it springs from a life transformation of the first order. From his '70s rock heyday, when audacity and excess epitomized his live performances, through the '80s, when they epitomized his lifestyle, John was the crown prince of the rock stage, a role he took to the extreme in developing drug and alcohol addictions. In the '90s, he cleaned up and awoke to a world where drugs and AIDS were claiming the lives of many less fortunate than himself. The singer felt the need to give something back, started the Elton John AIDS Foundation, joined the boards of numerous beneficent organizations and became the venerable Sir Elton John, knighted for his selfless good works. It's an evolution of which John is rightfully proud. His honest and open approach to his life and his service to the world community make him a deserving MusiCares honoree. |
