Immediately after docking in Cozumel I took a fast ferry to mainland Mexico.
From Playa del Carmen I took a bus to the Coba ruins.

Coba is an ancient Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula, located in what is now
northeastern Quintana Roo, Mexico. The site is the nexus of the largest network
of stone causeways of the ancient Mayan world, and it contains many engraved and
sculpted stelae that document ceremonial life and important events of the Late
Classic Period (AD 600-900) of Mesoamerican civilization.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON JANUARY 14, 2015
Hello,

Today we were on the island of Cozumel, Mexico even though I saw absolutely none of it. We docked here at sunrise this morning. After getting off the ship I walked over to the next pier and got on a ferry to the mainland.

Got a brief view of Cozumel from the ferry as we were leaving.

It was a very fast ferry and we got to the mainland in about thirty minutes. We docked in the city of Playa del Carmen which is about 30 miles south of Cancun. It was then a couple hour bus ride to the Coba Mayan Ruins. Below is a sports structure. There is another one exactly like it on the other side for the other team. You try to get a ball through the ring in the center. The winner is then beheaded and offered as a sacrifice.

Below is the main temple.

It is 147 feet high. The steps are very steep. Most of the group climbed to the top. I would have loved to do so but those days are gone forever. I was lucky to even make it to the temple. It was over a mile walk to get here. The walk there wasn't bad, we stopped frequently to see other things. But after we came straight back without stopping. That about killed me.

We spent almost three hours at the ruins and then returned the way we came. Below is a picture of the beach back in Playa del Carmen.

I was on a larger ferry coming back. It wasn't as fast and it took longer. Below is a picture of the ship from the ferry as we were coming back into Cozumel. The Costa ship wasn't there when we left this morning. They say this is the most visited island in the world because of the huge number of cruise ships that come here.

We were supposed to be back on board by 4:30, but we didn't make it. It was 5:00 before we got back on board. They pulled in the gangways right behind us and we were sailing away within a few minutes. As we were sailing away there was a beautiful sunset.

Tomorrow is a day at sea. Then on Friday we are back at Princess Cays for the day. Then on Saturday it is back to Fort Lauderdale and the flight home.
